On The Ropes #2
Posted on 27 Jan 2010

C-walk: Welcome to the second edition of "On The Ropes", with Shane and Chris. It’s a new year, and a lot has happened since our last column. Isn’t that right, Shane?

Shane: Yes… Yes there has.

C-walk: Oh, so it’s going to be like that again?

Shane: Yup.

C-walk: *sigh*

Shane: Well, lets see. There’s been the live TNA episode, as well as PCW’s New Year’s Knockout. Plus, there are many things to look forward to in the up-coming weeks, like UFC 109, The Royal Rumble, and of course the next PCW show, Thunderstruck.

C-walk: Hey, Shane! Those sound like perfect topics for the column that we are currently writing! What a coincidence!

Shane: … Well then, lets get down to business.

C-walk: You mean Johnny Falcon?

Shane: No, we’re not going to botch-up the blog.

C-walk: Ouch, Shane. That’s a little harsh. Now seriously, lets get down to busin…. Err, I mean, the blog.

1. PCW’s New Year’s Knockout has come and gone. There was a title change, a guest appearance, a swerve ending, and a match with so many weapons that it resembled a yard sale. Your thoughts?

Shane: Wow, where to begin? Okay, well there was a first for me… A “Fans Bring The Weapons” match. We saw everything… From a box full of keyboards to a small, pink lawn chair. And those bastards didn’t use my X-box!

C-walk: Enough about your damn X-box! Nobody likes X-box anyways. But I did like the use of the foam hammer by JP Kaos. The return of the chocolate orange was great, as well.

Shane: Something that caught me by surprise was the Tag Team Title change, which seems to be switching hands every other show. Team Impact won them in that fatal four-way, then lost them to 787 the next month. 787 had one title defence in December, and then lost the belts to the Suicide Kings.

C-walk: Yeah, that was pretty shocking. I was expecting to see 787 have a long and dominant reign as champions. But it looks like Sabertooth and Nate Hardy aren’t finished with each other yet. In fact, I could see Lacey having a big role in this feud. Perhaps she’s going to make a heel turn.

Shane: Well, speaking of heel turns… Steve Corino turned his back on his “buddy”, Robby Royce… which I called, for the record. This could set-up a potentially great rubber match between those two for an up-coming PCW event.

C-walk: That’s true. I would definitely like to see Corino and Royce battle, and I’m sure it’s going to happen some time this year. Hopefully, there will be some sort of added stipulation to the match, like Falls Count Anywhere or Strap match or…

Shane: Loser-lives-in-Brandon match! I hear their hospitals are fantastic!

C-walk: We’ll have to ask Chad Tatum. Anyways, I thought New Year’s Knockout was a very good show. There was some high-quality wrestling, lots of storyline-advancement, and…

Shane: A packed crowd that WFX could only dream of.

C-walk: Niiice.

2. Superstar Spotlight: Scott Justice

C-walk: So each blog, we’re going to do a “Superstar Spotlight” question, basically concentrating our thoughts on one specific PCW wrestler (sorry, “Filthy” Josh Hammerstein). The person we chose this time is Scott Justice. I think he has a lot of potential in PCW and could very well become the next Junior Heavyweight Champion. He’s been very solid in the ring so far, but that’s not too surprising, given who trained him. A feud with Antonio Scorpio Jr seems very likely for 2010. Although, I have to admit, he wasn’t my first choice for our “Superstar Spotlight” feature. Why did you want to pick him, Shane?

Shane: Because he’s a talented wrestler from Australia, mate. I think his future is bright, mate. And Lance Storm trained him, mate!

C-walk: Did you get that out of your system?

Shane: Yes sir.

3. TNA did their first live Monday night show earlier this month, going head-to-head with the WWE. Do you think this was a smart move on TNA’s part? Should they try to do a live show every Monday, or keep Impact on it’s current Thursday evening time slot?

Shane: I think the whole “live on Monday” thing was a good way to test the waters with competing against the WWE full-time. The ratings had a good improvement, so that could be a sign of things to come. I do believe that they should do a live show every week, but not on Mondays. Maybe they could do it on Wednesday, so it would sometimes lead in to The Ultimate Fighter (or vice versa).

C-walk: I agree that the live show was a good idea, especially going head-to-head with WWE. TNA was able to get a decent feel for going live, and got to see how their product would measure up their competition. I believe that having a live Monday program each week is inevitable, but for right now, they should probably limit it to once every couple of months. That way, they can get used to the transitions and the quality of the production will increase. Those constant commercial breaks were very annoying.

4. The Royal Rumble is this Sunday, and there is always some sort of surprise in store for this event. So the obvious question is… Who do you think is going to win the Rumble match?

Shane: I think Triple H will win the Rumble. That way he can get his one-billionth title reign and bore the shit out of me all over again.

C-walk: Knowing WWE, you’re probably right. I would not be surprised to see Triple H win it at all. But I could see Shawn Michaels winning the Rumble as well, just so he can get another shot at The Undertaker. Personally, I don’t want to see this. They had a great match last year, but I think both men should be facing someone younger at Wrestlemania. Someone who could actually benefit from facing them. I still think that Jericho should face The Undertaker at Wrestlemania.

Shane: See, that’s what the fans want, but they’re not going to get. The WWE creative team has to pull their heads out of Vince’s ass and start giving the fans what they want.

C-walk: It’s too bad, because the promos between Jericho and Taker could’ve been excellent.

5. Finally, PCW Thunderstruck is going to be on February 18th, and it has already been announced that there will be a Junior Heavyweight Title tournament, which will determine the two top contenders for that title. A #1 Contender’s match for the Canadian Title between Chad Tatum and ATM is also scheduled. Your thoughts?

C-walk: I’m looking forward to both the tournament and the #1 contender’s match. I think ATM vs. Tatum could potentially be the match of the night. They are both very capable of putting on an entertaining match, and I think their wrestling styles work well together. As for the tournament, it’s relatively hard to predict, since the only name announced for it is Scott Justice. I could definitely see him making it to the finals. I’m also glad that Kenny Omega will be back on the show, although I’m not sure who he will face.

Shane: I have a good feeling that the ATM-Tatum match will be a real barnburner!

C-walk: Barnburner? What does that even mean?

Shane: I don’t know, I just heard it on Corner Gas once. As far as the tournament goes, it should provide for some splendid in-ring action, despite not knowing all of the competitors. I’m sure that everyone will have a fantastic evening.

C-walk: Well, that’s it for right now. We hope you enjoyed “On The Ropes”! Anything else you want to add, Shane?

Shane: Nah, I was finished an hour ago.

C-walk: That’s what she said.
