Impact Analysis #2

-= TNA IMPACT =-= 12/17/2009 =-= Judgement Day For Double J =-

-- Show opens with footage from earlier in the day at the Impact Zone, where Mick Foley attacks Kevin Nash. As he’s punching Nash by the announcer’s table, Foley does his best “DK Roll” onto the floor! I don’t know why he did that… one too many shots to the head, perhaps? World Elite comes in to pull Foley off Nash.

-- Roxxi is back in TNA, competing against ODB in a non-title match. Solid knockout match, nothing too special. Roxxi looks very good in her comeback, but I can’t get into the match too much, since ODB is in it. Somewhat surprisingly, Roxxi picks up the win over the Knockout Champ! ODB attacks after the bell, which basically just serves as a reason to get Tara out to the ring. Here’s hoping for a title change at Final Resolution.

-- Footage airs of Foley’s meeting with Hulk Hogan, which Kevin Nash set up for him last week. Foley is waiting at a gym, when Lou Ferrigno shows up! So instead of setting up a meeting with Hulk Hogan... Nash set up a meeting with the original Hulk… See, Nash led Foley to believe one Hulk would be another Hulk… I’ll give you a minute to catch on.

-- Nash cuts an angry promo after this, threatening that Hogan is coming on Jan. 4th, and Foley will be unemployed. Again, Nash delivers well on this promo. He is very believable in everything that he says.

-- Abyss, on the other hand, is not. He reminds Foley about their Tag match at Final Resolution against Raven and Dr Stevie. Good thing he did, since I didn’t know that match was taking place. Lately, Foley has been all over the place. Involved in stuff with Nash, Jarrett, and Hogan, while this whole Abyss thing has taken a back seat to the rest. Despite that, the tag match should be fun, assuming it’s a hardcore match.

-- Matt Morgan vs Brother Ray is next, and it’s basically what you’d expect from the two. Their respective allies are all there at ringside, so eventually all hell breaks loose. Brother Ray gets the win after sneaky tactics. Makes sense… he’s probably losing on Sunday.

-- Next match is a multi-Knockout tag match. The Beautiful People vs. Hamada & Awesome Kong vs. Sarita & Taylor Wilde. It starts out very fast-paced, with Sarita hitting a flying head scissors that reminds me of how Rey Mysterio used to do them, back when he was actually good. Hamada hits a moonsault to the outside and onto the Knockout champs, while Awesome Kong destroys Madison in the ring. Wow, that was a pretty short match. Kong and Hamada looked very dominant.

-- The 2nd Black Machismo Invitational has Jay Lethal take on… Tatanka! Tatanka controls the early part of the match, until Lethal gains an advantage. Eventually, Tatanka makes his comeback and hits a huge Samoan drop for the win. I hope this eventually leads to a Jay Lethal heel turn, where he gets sick of imitating other legends and decides to become one of his own.

-- Motor City Machineguns promo is great. They didn’t even do anything special, but they are just so entertaining. I’d love to see them get a bigger push in TNA. They definitely deserve it.

-- Final Resolution Rundown… the card looks pretty solid. The main events are AJ Styles vs Christopher Daniels foe the TNA Heavyweight Title, as well as Kurt Angle vs Desmond Wolfe in 3 Degrees of Pain. Those two matches alone should be worth the money.

-- Jeff Jarrett apologizes to Dixie Carter for the whole incident that led to his hiatus from the company. Dixie says that Jarrett has to apologize to Kurt Angle instead. I kinda hope Kurt doesn’t accept the apology, regardless of the fact that he’s a face now, since he and Jarrett had a big feud earlier.

-- Daniels vs. Desmond Wolfe is up now. Daniels has the Omega symbol on the back of his trunks. If he hits a Hadouken, I’m calling gimmick infringement! Dueling “Fallen Angel” and “Lets Go Wolfe” chants from the crowd. The match starts out very technical, with each man getting a 1-up on the other. Wolfe smacks Daniels across the face, so Daniels hits him with an STO, followed by a springboard moonsault. Wolfe reverses the Angel’s Wings and transitions through numerous submissions that would take too long to explain. This has been a very good match so far! Crowd chants “This is Awesome”. Daniels avoids the Tower of London, which leads to many quick near-falls. Right in the middle of a small package, the bell rings and the time limit has expired! Another crowd chant, this time it’s “Let Them Fight!” and I couldn’t agree more. Definitely hope to see a rematch between these two, preferably on PPV so they can have a lengthy amount of time in the ring.

-- Jarrett apologies to Kurt backstage, and thankfully, Angle doesn’t accept it. He simply ignores Jarrett and leaves the room.

-- 10-man tag main event with Scott Steiner, Raven, Dr Stevie and the British Invasion taking on AJ Styles, Kurt Angle, Abyss, Lashley and Tomko. Wow, these teams are NOT matched very evenly. Raven bites on Abyss’ burnt leg because… well, Raven is awesome like that. Abyss hobbles after Raven & Stevie, while Lashley and Steiner brawl on the outside as well. This has match has quickly changed from 10-on-10 to 3-on-2, with Styles, Angle and Tomko (Angle Alliance Reunion!!!~) against the Brits. Once again, this isn’t very fair. Unless of course, there were some sort of double-cross… Anyways, the Brits actually control some of the match against Angle. Am I the only person who would really like to see a one-on-one match between Kurt Angle and Doug Williams?

-- Cameras go backstage on occasion, to show the brawls between the other people in this match. The end comes when the British Invasion go for their double team finisher, but Tomko hits Williams off the top rope, allowing Styles to roll up Magnus for the win!

-- After the match, Angle and Styles get into an argument in the ring, since Angle was holding AJ’s title belt. They begin to fight, but are soon attacked by their PPV opponents, Daniels and Desmond Wolfe. Wolfe locks Angle in a submission hold, while Daniels hits the Angel’s Wings on Styles and then poses with the TNA Heavyweight Title, to close out the show.

--= Final Thoughts =-

This episode of Impact got off to a rather slow start, but really picked up going into the second hour. The Knockout’s matches were rather short, but decent, and while Mick Foley is entertaining, he has been getting a few too many backstage segments lately. The match between Daniels and Wolfe was excellent, and the main event was entertaining, and certainly served a purpose heading into Final Resolution. I’d love to see Daniels win the title this Sunday, but I doubt it will actually happen. I am very curious to see where Styles, Daniels, Angle & Wolfe go after the PPV is over. Any feud combination of those four would be great. Add Tomko to the mix, since he will probably start a program with Styles in the next month or two, and it could make for some interesting matches. Overall, I would say this was a very solid edition of Impact. The first half was okay, but things definitely picked up in the second half.

-= Top 3 =-
1. Daniels (for wrestling a great match and then looking strong at the end of the show)
2. Desmond Wolfe (see: Daniels)
3. Roxxi (for getting a win over the Knockout Champion)

That’s your Impact Analysis for the week. I’m glad to have gotten this posted earlier than the previous review. Next week, Impact is not airing, so there won’t be a review (good thing, too, since the holidays are going to keep me a busy man). However, the following Thursday, New Years Eve, there will be a four-hour edition of Impact, featuring the best matches of 2009, as well as an eight-woman Knockouts Tournament, which could provide some very good in-ring wrestling. That’s it for this week! I’ll see you in 2010!
