Impact Analysis #9

-= TNA IMPACT Live on Monday Night =-= March 8th, 2010 =-

This Impact Analysis will be a little different than the previous ones. I watched Impact live on Monday, but have been out of town for the majority of the week since then. Thus, I haven't had any significant amount of computer time in order to speak on TNA's first episode of Impact, since the permanent move to Monday nights. Instead of doing a segment-by-segment anaylsis, I'm simply going to cover some of the bigger moments on the show, and give my thoughts. So with that out of the way, lets get into it!

-- The first big moment on Impact occured within the first ten minutes of the show. The main event tag team match actually kicked off the show, with TNA Champ, AJ Styles, teaming with Ric Flair to take on Hulk Hogan and Abyss. The match broke down into a brawl pretty early, with the heels taking advantage, until the lights went out momentarily and STING appears in the ring! He then pulls out the first shocker of the night, and turns on Hogan and Abyss, nailing them both repeatedly with his baseball bat. Personally, I thought this was a great segment to open the show with. It got me hooked, since I was under the impression that the main event was kicking off the show, and then delivered a great twist with Sting's heel turn. One nice thing about the heel turn was that nobody saw it coming (until maybe a few seconds before he hit Hogan). The element of surprise is hard to secure nowadays, so this was a very satisfying twist to start off the show.

-- I recall the first actual match being the X-Division triple threat between Doug Williams, Kaz, and Daniels. This was another highlight of the show for me. They gave this match more time than I was expecting it to get, and all three guys came close to winning on several ocassions. By the end, I was unsure as to who would actally get the win. It ended up being Williams, who retained the X-Title, before finding out that he'd have to defend that title against Shannon Moore at Destination X. I'm not a huge fan of Moore, so this wasn't really something I cared for... especially since Moore didn't exactly do anything to earn his title shot. The only logic to it is that Williams had technically just beat the top two contenders for his belt, so he needed a new one for the PPV. And I'm sure the match itself will be pretty good, but I'm not too interested in it (at least not yet). The real news is that The Machine Guns will take on Generation Me in an Ultimate X match at the same PPV.... THAT is going to be a crazy match!

-- Another segment I really enjoyed was the return of RVD! While I would've liked to see him wrestle a longer match, I'm sure he's going to do that in due time. For now, it was just nice seeing him return, and get a big win over Sting in the process! The post-match beatdown by Sting was necessary in order to get across the fact that Sting really is a bad guy now. I know some people (including a certain former Undisputed Champion from Winnipeg) thought that RVD was "buried" on his debut, but he still got the win, and now a feud with a top name has already been set-up for him.

-- The Beautiful People won the Knockout's Tag Titles... That's nice, but I can't help but feel that they're about a year too late.

-- I'm confused as to why Beer Money suddenly became heels, when they hadn't been teasing it or anything. All of a sudden, they just decided to be angry backstage? It seemed off, especially since they are very over as faces right now. The match against Jeff Jarrett wasn't anything too interesting, and left me rather confused when it was over. Jarrett has only been back for a month of two, and I already wish he'd take another break.

-- The main event, which turned out to be a No DQ match, was good, for what it was. Flair bled all over the place. Styles was his usual greatness, and Abyss was decent (for Abyss, at least). The ending was somewhat predictable though. I guess it makes sense, since Abyss is challenging for the title at Destination X, and I'm pretty sure he's not going to win it (fingers crossed). The return of Jeff Hardy was cool to see, even though I'm definitely not Hardy's biggest fan. Spike TV must be really strict about the time cut-off, since they stopped Impact right before Hardy could hit his Swanton. LAME! It will be interesting to see where Hardy fits into things in TNA, although in terms of matches, I'm much more eager to see RVD face the likes of Styles and the Machine Guns, over someone like Jeff Hardy.

-- Overall, I really enjoyed this edition of Impact. For the most part, it kept me interested the entire way through. Bischoff is still doing great as the antagonist heel boss. There are lots of things I'm looking forward to seeing in TNA, including their up-coming PPV. Previously, I figured that AJ Styles would be defending against Pope at Destination X, since that's the X-Division show, and then defending against Abyss at Lockdown, since they'd be stuck in a steel cage (and they had a great cage match in TNA years ago, too). But with the way they have it set-up, Pope vs. Atyles will be a cage match, which could be very entertaining, since both men are so technically sound in the ring.

But I digress... This was a strong episode of Impact, and they have plenty of angles to really build on and develop from here. I've run out of time for now (didn't even get to touch on the Angle/Anderson and Nash/Young/Hall/Pac feuds) but I will be back next week! Until then, you can hit me up on the PCW forums. Hope you enjoyed this edition of the Impact Analysis! Thanks for reading!
